1. Wear it Consistently –
Use your hearing aid for at least 7-8 hours/day, to train your brain to adjust with new auditory stimulation. You can increase your usage hours gradually in the first few days. It is simple, the more you use, the more it benefits.\
2. Proper Fit –
Make sure your hearing aid fits snugly in your ear and is not loose/ coming out. Learn how to wear it correctly with the help of your audiologist. You can also involve your family to help you with proper fit in the initial days. You can sit on the bed/ sofa and take the help of the mirror for that perfect fit.
3. Explore Different Listening Environments –
Wear your hearing aid in different listening environments and make note of the discomforts you face. You can keep a diary for the same. On your next visit to an audiologist, discuss the issues you faced and get the necessary adjustments done to your device. Remember, the first setting done on your hearing aid is not the final one and the only one.
4. Cleaning and Maintenance-
Keep your hearing aid free from wax buildup and moisture. It’s a good habit to wipe it clean before and after use each day. Keep it in a dehumidifier box once a week. Keep track of batteries. Don’t leave the battery inside the hearing aid when not in use.
5. Communication Strategies –
Hearing aids are not replacements to your ears. Please have realistic expectations from the device. It is always good to supplement listening with visual cues like facing the listeners, optimizing lighting; and reducing background noise while having a conversation.
